Will the Dolphins Draft Tannehill?

[1]With so many questions being asked this time of year, perhaps none has been asked more than this one: Will the Dolphins draft Ryan Tannehill?

Here’s the answer: I don’t know.

And neither do you.

The quarterback out of Texas A&M is now considered the be the third-best prospect at his position, behind the assumed top two picks, Stanford’s Andrew Luck and Baylor’s Robert Griffin III. Used mostly at wide receiver in 2008 and 2009, Tannehill completed 62.6% of his passes the last two seasons and threw 42 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.

There are two main reasons Tannehill’s name has been linked to the Dolphins: 1) They are in search of the guy that can be their next “franchise” quarterback and 2) His head coach at A&M, Mike Sherman, is now the Dolphins offensive coordinator.

All of that dot-connecting is great and makes for good conversation but at the end of the day, it is all very, very simple: If Jeff Ireland and Joe Philbin and Sherman like Tannehill enough to think that he has the potential to be the next long-term solution at QB, and if he’s there at #8, they’ll take him. If they don’t, they won’t.

Heck, they may even move up to #3 if they feel that’s what’s necessary. That might sound crazy, I know, but realize this: if these guys think he can be the Post-Marino Answer we’ve all been looking for since 1999, there’s no price too high.

I think there are definite parallels to the Matt Flynn situation. The Dolphins had as much intel on him as anyone (the Philbin connection), much like they do on Tannehill (Sherman). They eventually decided Flynn wasn’t the guy. Not for $8 million like Seattle did, and so they passed. If they think Tannehill is the guy, they’ll take him. If they let him go by on April 26th, it will tell you everything you need to know about their evaluation of him.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a massive decision for the Dolphins’ brain trust to make and it could very well define several careers. But if anyone tells you they know the answer to this month’s biggest Dolphins question, feel free to roll your eyes.

Where do you think Tannehill will be drafted?
