Tannehill Adjusting To The Speed Of The Regular Season

Tannehill sat down with The Finsiders to talk about his first career victory and looked ahead at this week’s matchup with the Jets, his first intra-divisional game.
“All the hurts hurt a little less after a win,” Tannehill said. “Coming in after a tough loss, you’re feeling it in the body; you’re feeling not great about your performance the day before. You’re coming in after a win, you make corrections. And they’re easier to make after a win. You’re going to make the same corrections after the loss, but everyone’s a little harder on themselves, harder on each other just because we didn’t win the game.
“But when you make the corrections after a win, everything’s a little bit easier.”
After a well-documented problem with tipped passes in Week 1, the Dolphins put Tannehill on the move. Perhaps to take advantage of his athleticism and make him more comfortable in the pocket, offensive coordinator Mike Sherman inserted more roll-outs. The variety in drops and movement may have given Tannehill a split second head start on the opposing front seven.
“If you’re always sitting up at seven-and-a-half, eight yards, they can kind of key off on your tackles and really put some pressure,” Tannehill said. “If you’re able to move the pocket, get outside, it gives them different looks they have to account for.”
With an AFC East division rival coming into to town, the stakes have been raised for the Dolphins’ first-year signal caller. It’s Jets week, so there’s definitely a different vibe at the Dolphins’ training facility, Tannehill admitted. Practices have a little bit more pop; as the week wears on, media scrutiny crescendos until kickoff.
“Everyone’s cranked up a little bit. Jets Week, Jets Week. That’s all you hear out on the practice field, so I’m getting the sense of urgency that everyone has,” Tannehill said. “I love it. I love the rivalry, I guess you could say—the division game. So it’s my first one—a lot of firsts like you said—but I’m looking forward to it.”
Against the Raiders, the Dolphins’ offensive line was able to neutralize the Richard Seymour-led pass rush, allowing Tannehill to manipulate some soft spots in Oakland’s zone. He may, however, face a little bit more pressure against the aggressive Jets defense.
On Wednesday, Jets head coach Rex Ryan said his defense wouldn’t be treating Tannehill like a “normal rookie,” though the Dolphins rookie should expect a more nuanced defense this week nonetheless, one that prefers to disguise coverages before the snap.
“They’ll have a safety playing a defensive end spot, linebackers all over the place, only two defensive linemen in the game,” Tannehill said. “They show a lot of different looks at you, but you can’t get concerned of who is in which spot. You’ve just got to look at the big picture and go from there.“
