Rang Feels Egnew Fits in West Coast Offense

[1]The reverberations from Rob Gronkowski’s record-breaking 2011 season are still being felt across the league.

His success will likely spawn a new breed of seam-busting tight ends because the NFL is, of course, a copycat league. This, perhaps, was the Dolphins’ reasoning behind taking Michael Egnew in the third round of last month’s draft.

CBSSports.com’s Rob Rang could see that being the case [2], believing Egnew could be used to create mismatches for Dolphins receivers similar to the way Joe Philbin used Jermichael Finley in Green Bay.

“With outside linebackers and safeties often asked to cover him down the seam, few defenses are able to allocate enough defenders to bracket any of the Packers’ receivers, often leaving them one on one for (Aaron) Rodgers to exploit,” Rang wrote. “In much the same fashion, Miami appears to be hoping to use third round pick, former Missouri tight end Michael Egnew.”

In Gary Pinkel’s offense at Missouri, Egnew often split wide and lined up next to receivers. This type of versatility might help Egnew get on the field quicker and could add a wrinkle to the new Dolphins offense.

“(He) has very impressive straight-line speed and has the soft hands,” said Rang when he joined The Finsiders last week. [3] “I think the Miami Dolphins are just taking a page from what they saw happen in the NFL last year.”

Traditionally, the tight end was primarily used as an extra run blocker and occasional receiver. But as the game has spread out, the tight end has become less of a decoy and more of a legitimate weapon.

“The day where tight ends were asked to come in and be in-line blockers helping out the right tackle has basically passed us by,” Rang said, “at least when it comes to the playmaking guys like the Dolphins found in Michael Egnew.”
