Naanee Looks To Breakthrough With Dolphins

[1]After spending several seasons learning from receivers like Steve Smith and Vincent Jackson, Legedu Naanee is ready for his next professional challenge.

The newly signed wide receiver joined The Finsiders to talk about why he signed with Miami and what type of skills he’ll bring to the team. [2]

Joe Philbin’s West Coast offense should allow the Dolphins’ wide receivers to shift all over the line of scrimmage depending on individual matchups. Naanee really doesn’t care where he gets put on the field, though, just as long as he’s near the football.

“I’m here to play,” Naanee said. “Any time the coach puts you on the field and has the confidence to get you the ball, I’m not going to limit myself to where I have to be to get it. I’m excited to be on the field.”

Naanee, who spent last year with the Carolina Panthers after four seasons in San Diego, has seen his role grow each year he’s been in the league. When he arrived at Boise State, Naanee competed for the starting quarterback position with eventual starter Jared Zabransky. Because of the position change in college and some injury problems, getting completely adjusted has been a gradual process. But his role–and stats–have improved each year in the NFL.   He hopes to that continues in Miami.

“The goal is to be a household name for anyone in the NFL,” Naanee said. “It’s been a transition for me each year. I’ve built, and I’ve been around different receivers I’ve been able to learn from and extend my game.”

When he moved to Carolina last year, he followed Ron Rivera and Rob Chudzinski, who had been offensive coaches in San Diego. This will be the rangy wide receiver’s first time playing in a West Coast offense.

“The concepts are similar, but the terminology, the way the plays are called, the way they get to different formations is different,” Naanee said. “I’m excited about it. It feels like a fresh start.”

Aside from having the opportunity to find a niche with Philbin’s offense, Naanee said the vibe at the facility sold him on the franchise.

“The biggest thing was just talking to the coaches,” Naanee said, “seeing the respect that all the faculty treat each other with, treat the players with and treated me with.”
