Ireland: We Have Made Some Great Strides
Posted By Jon Cope On November 7, 2012 @ 2:09 pm In Football | 1 Comment
Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland visited with Jesse Agler of The Finsiders this week to discuss a very important charity fundraiser that he is hosting with his wife, Rachel, this Friday with proceeds from the event benefiting families dealing with autism. For tickets and more information about the event call 954-262-7732 or visit www.cardautumnmoonlight.org .
While in studio, Ireland did briefly discuss the improvement shown by the Dolphins thus far in 2012.
“I think we’ve made some great strides…from every position that you look around the roster we’re developing players.”
The Dolphins have received major impact from not only rookies drafted by Ireland this year like Ryan Tannehill, Jonathan Martin and Olivier Vernon, but other Ireland draft picks such as Brian Hartline (2009, 4th round), Mike Pouncey (2011, 1st round), Koa Misi (2010, 2nd round), and Sean Smith (2009, 2nd round). Ireland credits Head Coach Joe Philbin and the Dolphins coaching staff for the progress shown by the young players.
“That’s the key thing that I look for in a coach. A guy that can come in with his culture, his way of doing things and see the development of the young players,” Ireland said. “The young players are buying in and when you buy into a culture, great things can happen and that’s what’s happening right now. I’m very excited about (not only) the rookie class, but some of the second-year and third-year players who have really coming into their own.”
There’s still a long road left in the 2012 season, but after a turbulent off-season and an 0-4 preseason, being in second place in the AFC East shows great signs of progress for Ireland’s young Dolphins roster. Rather than boast about the young talent that he has assembled, Ireland prefers to stay out of the spotlight during the season and credit the Dolphins coaching staff for the roster’s improvement.
“I told the team back in August that what we’ve got to do is come together as a team because we have talent. We just (hadn’t) come together as a team. And I think what Joe (Philbin) and his coaching staff has done is brought this team together and made it a team.”
As Ireland continues to look for ways to improve the roster in 2012 and beyond, he also is finding time on Friday to help the University of Miami Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities, a group that has helped Ireland and his daughters, who are inflicted with autism. Ireland has high praise for the organization.
“They can help you find out what your kid needs, what the disabilities are because autism affects different kids in different ways…It’s a no-charge group (and) it’s just a very helpful group.”
