In His Own Words: Jake Long

[1]Dolphins Pro Bowl left tackle Jake Long recently joined The Finsiders to talk about his health and his expectations heading into the 2012 season. [2] Here’s what he had to say:

On how he will spend his time leading up to training camp:

“You’ve got to keep working out. I’ll probably take a few days off during Fourth of July and enjoy that week, but I plan on working out four or five days a week. Keeping hydrated, keeping stretched and lifting and running, and just making sure I don’t lose where I’m at right now with my conditioning.”

On his physical condition:

“I feel great. This is honestly the best I’ve felt in a long time. It feels good to be out there, moving around quick like I know I can.”

On Philbin’s offensive line roots:

“You can see him over your shoulder watching us every now and then, but he’s definitely smart. He knows the game and been around for a long time and I’m really excited to have Coach Philbin here. Just the short time we’ve been playing for him and practicing under him we’ve been learning a lot, learning his philosophy. He’s all about discipline and earning your respect and family, all those things, and I really enjoy playing for him.”

On the optimism surrounding the team:

“I honestly believe that the sky is the limit for this team. We’ve got a lot of young guys. We’ve got hungry guys and we just got to put it together. We ended the year last year winning some games, we kind of got on a roll and we just got to keep that going through this year and we definitely have the guys to do it.”

On offensive line and second-round pick Jonathan Martin:

“Jon’s doing a great job. He came in the last couple weeks and been playing pretty well. I think we have the opportunity to be a really good offensive line. We’ve all been together in that room, except for a couple guys, for a few years now and the new guys are really meshing in and we all get along. We all have each other’s backs and we’re really communicating well in mini-camp and the OTAs. With this new offense we’re running, I think we have the athletic line that can open up some holes and run with the guys and create a lot of opportunities.”

On transitioning to the new style of offense:

“Honestly, I like this style. I ran this all through college and it’s fun because you get on a guy, you run him and the back can cut anywhere. Me, personally, I enjoy this offense.”

On the quality of the offensive line:

“Especially on an offensive line, you have to have the same five guys in there and really get adhesive and just play off one another because when you’re rotating guys and you have five, six, seven different guys in there, you don’t mesh as well as if you have that main five guys. We’re going to find those five guys, and we’re going to be a good group.”

On how the line reacts if a mistake is made:

“We all jump on each other. We all definitely hold each other accountable. If someone isn’t doing it right, you’ll talk to them, but definitely in the offensive line room, in meetings and when we’re by ourselves we definitely hold each other accountable.”

On the difference in blocking Reggie Bush as opposed to Daniel Thomas:

“Not really [different]. Daniel is definitely a little bit bigger, but honestly, both of them are great in this new offense and can find holes and can run over guys and can out run guys. They’re two great backs.”
