Behind Enemy Lines: Jaguars Gearing Up For Wake Ahead Of Henne’s Return

[1]In what turned out to be a strong defensive effort in San Francisco, Cam Wake set the tone early, bringing down 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick three times in the first half to tie a career high with 14 sacks (2010). He’ll try to add to that total against an old teammate on Sunday, with the Chad Henne-led Jacksonville Jaguars coming into town.

The All-Pro defensive end won’t sneak up on anyone, of course, and the Jaguars are planning accordingly.

“He can wreck a game,” said Jaguars Head Coach Mike Mularkey. “He’s having a phenomenal year. He’s definitely a guy you’ve got to be aware of when and where he’s at. You’ve got to handle him somehow or someway that he doesn’t become a factor in the game and can change it, because I’ve seen where he was that ability.

“But I love his relentlessness; he’s got such explosion off of the ball that he’s hard to block.”

Dolphins coaches have lauded Wake’s ability to use his strength and savvy to become a consistent run stopper–his all-around game was on display in San Francisco when he dropped into coverage and made a big third-down stop, preventing 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree from picking up a first down early in the fourth quarter.

But it’s his ability to get into the backfield so quickly, Mularkey said, that makes him such a dynamic player.

“It’s his get-off on the snap of the ball,” Mularkey said. “It’s that first step that is what’s so impressive about him.”

By now, Wake’s football odyssey has been well-documented. He arrived in Miami as a virtual unknown to most, flying under the radar even as we coming off of back-to-back CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player awards. Even then, though, before he had established himself as one of the league’s feared pass rushers, Henne had a feeling Wake would break out quickly.

“From day one when he stepped into Miami, you knew he was going to be something special.”
