Quarterbacks Pat Devlin and Jake Locker Take The Podium

Although some may not know it, there are other talented quarterbacks in the 2011 draft class besides Auburn’s Cam Newton. In his latest blog from the Combine, Andy Kent takes a look at some of the quarterbacks that will be showing off their skills in Indy this weekend.

Indianapolis- Someone clearly prepped Delaware quarterback Pat Devlin for the expected comparisons being drawn between him and former Blue Hens quarterback Joe Flacco. Not only did they star at the same college, but also they took a very similar path by transferring from a Division I powerhouse – Flacco from Pittsburgh and Devlin from Penn State.
Flacco is taller at 6-foot-6 than the 6-4 Devlin, and the two haven’t really talked much. Devlin is encouraged by how Flacco’s career has progressed, beginning with being taken in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft, but he clearly wants to be known as Pat Devlin and not as the next Joe Flacco coming out of Delaware.
“It really came down to Delaware has a great football tradition and they also have great academics and those are two things that are really tough to pass up,” said Devlin, who also benefited from not having to sit out a year when he transferred because he moved down from Division I-A. “I think (the NFL) is great at evaluating talent and I think if the talent’s there they will find you and that’s basically what it comes down to.”
Devlin considers his accuracy to be his biggest strength and he models his game after Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, who was taken ahead of Flacco in that same draft. Washington’s Jake Locker faces the task of dispelling the notion that accuracy is a concern with him, so these are two of the quarterbacks rated in that second tier behind Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert in need of making an impression this week.
Locker laughed a little when he was asked how tired he was of hearing about his accuracy and he knew it was going to be one of the main questions he would face in the interviews with teams. Having decided to stay in school and not come out after his junior year, he feels like he made the right decision.
“As a player and as a person I’m a lot more prepared for this process,” Locker said. “Doing things like this (the Combine) and going through this process and being comfortable going through it, I don’t think I would have been as prepared for it last year. … I feel a lot better after having another year playing with the coaches that I did and in the system that I did.”
