Breaking Down: Ryan Mallett

[1]With the typical amount of excitement surrounding the quarterback position at this time of year, today we take a closer look at one of the guys that is expected to be drafted in the first round: Ryan Mallett of Arkansas.

The 6’6″ Mallett is a monster figure in the pocket and has a tremendous arm. There are, of course, a couple of knocks on him. For one, he isn’t exactly the fastest guy out there. In fact, his time in the 40-yard dash at his Pro Day was slower than most offensive linemen. That said, when he is well-protected, most scouts feel that he can make pretty much any throw he needs to.

Wes Bunting, of the National Football Post [2], told us that he spoke to one scout who said he “looks like a big tree out there.” Bunting added that Mallett is “not a guy that can consistently buy time for himself.”

As for that big arm, Rob Rang of CBSSports.com [3] said “there is no question that he’s the most talented passer in this year’s draft.” He added that Mallett has “an absolute cannon of an arm” and that he “came from a pro-style offense where he had to make adjustments at the line,” a definite rarity in today’s game.

Meanwhile, there have been rumors swirling around Mallett regarding alleged drug use, a topic he somewhat controversially refused to discuss with the media at the Combine. That said, he told reporters that all of those issues were addressed when he met with coaches and GM’s.

So what’s the bottom line? Rang thinks that with a good offensive line and weapons around him, Mallett could be similar to what Joe Flacco is for the Ravens. Bunting, on the other hand, said that Mallett made a lot of “mirage” throws in college–occasional big throws that make you forget about his “terrible” ones–and that, at the end of the day, he’s “not that impressive as a prospect.”

So, what do you think?

Would you be happy with the Dolphins drafting Ryan Mallett?
